Boner-ific Foods! Ha Ha!

How sad is this... I have osteoporosis. No, I didn't just find out, in fact I have had this debilitating bone disease since I was 17 years old!
So what categories do I fall under when it comes to who is susceptible to getting this disease?
- Well I am a female
- I am a small person
- My mother & grandmother have osteoporosis (THANKS GUYS!)
- I am Caucasian

... But yea, that's it! I don't smoke, I work out every day, I eat right and take LOTS of calcium and vitamin D... SO WTF GIVES! Eh, probably a majority has to do with the fact that it's in my genes but you know what... I AM GOING TO FIGHT IT... And what better way to do that then by... EATING FOR MY BONES!
So you're probably ALL thinking, go grab a damn carton of milk and down that bad boy, STAT! But hold on! I don't drink or eat dairy! I do not digest it well... I guess you could call me lactose-intolerant! PLUS... I am completely against all dairy so even if I could drink it, I probably wouldn't, bah!
Recently a friend of mine was talking about calcium and all it's "wonderfulness" and it got me thinking about the different foods (other than dairy) that are chock full... so I did a bit of research and here is what I discovered!
- Sardines, Mackerel, Tuna & Salmon WITH BONES
- Sesame Seeds
- Collard Greens
- Broccoli
- Tofu
- Turnip Greens
- Brussels Sprouts
- Almonds
- Bok Choy
- Peas
- Spinach
- Kale
- Parsley
- Sea Vegetables
- Shrimp
- Raw Oysters

Ah Ha! See, I don't need to rush to the fridge for a gallon of milk... Instead I can go get a salmon sashimi salad with sea vegetables and a side of sauteed kale... Or I can get all "aphrodisiac" and down some raw oysters! But seriously, if you don't eat dairy and are concerned about your calcium levels, pounce on these foods! Plus, they're good for you!
Alright, now I am hungry... I am going to go eat my favorite snack of all time... Spinach with Sugar-free Heinz Ketchup all wrapped up in NORI SHEETS! ha ha! Sounds delicious right?
FYI: You need about 1500 mg of calcium a day... taken in divided doses of 500 mg at a time because your body cannot absorb more at a time!
calcium carbonate : highest amount of calcium per pill but may cause intestinal gas and/or constipation, and is poorly absorbed
calcium citrate: less calcium per pill but better absorbed than carbonate. No known side effects

Food Review
Since yesterday was labor day... I thought I review a food that I just recently tried for the first time (that a lot of people chow down on labor day) after a long time of always walking by it in the store telling myself... "you should really try those"....
Want to know what I tried?
Well even if you could care less I am going to tell you anyways... Applegate Farms Grass-Fed Hot Dogs!!

So think of the last hot dog you ate... did you like it... or did you just think... "holy moly I am eating a lot of unhealthy calories for something so small"... well now you NO LONGER have to think that way because these hot dogs I found are SPOT ON (in taste) to the real thing but are actually HEALTHY FOR YOU!
Grass-Fed & Grass-Finished Red Meat (including hot dogs) is by far superior to grain-fed & grain-finished red meats... check out why at EatWild.com... that website explains it so much better than I ever can!
Really though... I am sure you want to know just how these suckers taste: well let's just say I was dying (of happiness) when I was eating them because man, were they good! They taste just like the originals and with a mix of mustard and ketchup (yes, my Heinz Sugar Free Ketchup does the trick, no doubt)... my taste buds start doing the tango!

Since I don't eat bread, I wrapped these puppies (ha ha, pun intended) in lettuce boats which worked out incredibly well...
In fact I liked these hot dogs so much, I bought 2 more packages at the store today: they were on sale for $3.99 per package... each package holding 8 dogs...
Each dog has 110 calories... so if you ate 5 dogs, you would be eating just 550 calories... well I'm no sure if you think that is a lot or not but for me that's definitely something I will be doing in the near future! ha ha.
As for the ingredients... each dog is packed with: Organic Grass-Fed Beef, Water, Contains Less Than 2% Of The Following: Sea Salt, Organic Spices, Organic Garlic Powder, Organic Paprika, Celery Powder, Organic Onion, Lactic Acid Starter Culture (Not From Milk). --> Looks like a WINNER in my mind: no sugar or any other "kookie" ingredients that might RUIN my hot dog loving experience!
Even though hot dog season is coming to a close... I will most definitely be buying these suckers through the winter because they could always be used in stews, scrambled eggs, salads... just use your imagination!
Honestly though, if you were apprehensive about trying these dogs out like I was... push that curiosity aside and buy a package the next time you seem em'- well work your money, hands down!
**PS: These hot dogs are ALREADY cooked so they are extremely easy & quick for when you or your family is on the go but need a protein packed snack/meal!**

I am reminded of my youth!!!

Gah! So this might be a ridiculous post but at the same time I think it's pretty appropriate since it is that time of year where EVERYONE is grilling (and a lot of people are trying to maintain their bikini/bathing suit bodies!)....
So first I must give some background information... Ever since I was little I have adored ketchup! Ketchup sandwiches were ranked very high on my favorite food combination list! (Mayo sandwiches being a close second)...
But ever since I realized what high-fructose corn syrup was (which was a VERY LONG TIME AGO - thanks to my health conscious mother)... I stopped eating the stuff!
The other day I was ambling around the grocery store, sort of wasting time but also trying to keep myself busy until a check-out line wasn't about 10 people long... when I came across an interesting product in the condiment aisle...
I didn't really think anything of it until I remembered the days of when I was nine years old and younger, eating my juicy corn-fed hamburgers (yea, that's another topic to be discussed) on my very mushy white bun (how I invented the ketchup sandwich)...
Instead of continuing on to the check out line, I picked up a Heinz Reduced Sugar Ketchup bottle JUST TO SEE what filled the sugar void... and TO MY SURPRISE it was only sweetened with some Splenda (which I allow in my diet)!!!!! Not to mention, instead of the typical 15 calories per tbsp there is ONLY 5 and there is even 20 less milligrams of salt in the low sugar variety!
Ingredients as stated on the bottle: Tomato Concentrate from Red Ripe Tomatoes, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Natural Flavoring, Onion Powder, *Sucralose, Spice. *NOT IN REGULAR KETCHUP
**Not really sure what "natural flavoring & spice" mean but at this moment in time I am too excited to care!
So of course, out of impulse and because it's that time of the year where I miss having ketchup with my burgers... I bought it!
When I finally got back to my place that afternoon I dropped all of my groceries on the floor because my curiosity was brewing intensely and BOY WAS I PLEASANTLY SURPRISE! WHAT A GREAT BUY! (Typically I have no luck with trying new things... I tried a mock ketchup by Walden Farms once and it was REPULSIVE)
This ketchup tasted EXACTLY like the real stuff! It cannot be beat! It's consistency was spot on and the flavor was tangy yet sweet, just the way ketchup is suppose to be!
When I tried my new LOVE on a burger I cooked that evening... even more in love than before... oh and my love grew EVEN FONDER (if it is at all possible) when... I PUT IT ON SPAGHETTI SQUASH!!! My taste buds are officially ecstatic all thanks to a 15 ounce bottle of Heinz Reduced Sugar Ketchup!
So if any of you out there are trying to avoid high-fructose corn syrup - this product is definitely a WONDERFUL replacement (after all, I wouldn't have an ENTIRE blog post dedicated to it if I didn't think so! ha ha!)
PS: Ketchup (the non/low sugar types) are extremely healthy for you because tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that is known for warding off all sorts of cancers. This antioxidant is also known to be a low dose SPF! Who would have thought that quote "food as thy medicine" could be true! More reasons to love this awesome staple!! **Might as well just swirt the bottle into your mouth, no?**
PSS: This is a Low Carb & GLUTEN-FREE food!
