So I gotta ask...

So almost on a daily basis I consume the ingredient glycerin... but really have NO CLUE whether or not it's bad for my health (which is weird for me because I know everything and anything about health, nutrition, fitness, etc)...

I have tried to look this ingredient up all over... I mean Dr. Google and RN Yahoo, why in the world have you not given me answers! I understand we are under Obama Care now which means longer waiting... but common, I want to know what the deal is!

So does anyone else have a clue as to what it might be?

This is what I have so far:

Glycerin is an odorless, colorless liquid that can be used for many functions. It comes from vegetable apparently and it is "100 %" safe...

Now do I believe this 100% safe claim? I mean the FDA believes Aspartame is safe but I have read otherwise (although, I won't lie to you, I do chew a far amount of sugar-free gum, whoops! Oh the little vices in life).

But wait a minute, now I am reading that glycerin comes from the soap making process. That's gross, I don't think ingesting soap is all that healthy now is it!?

Oh geeze, look at what else I found...

Glycerin =

1. A Love Potion
2. Paint Brush Cleaner
3. Highly Explosive
4. Heart Disease Drug
5. Safe Sweetener: Glycerin is an alcohol (glycerol) and is used as a preservative in the food industry, as well as a sweetener: it is very sweet, yet it contains no sugar.
6. Health Supplement
7. Plant Preserver
8. Photocopier?!?!?!
9. Moisturizer

GAH!!! So many uses, not sure what to believe... but I think I will go with number 1, 4, 5 and 6! And since I just found out that it's just so healthy... I'm going to go ingest some now! Ha Ha! Wish me luck though because who knows... number 3 might happen!

FYI: I used flavor concentrates, one of the many places glycerin is found.

"A state of total awareness" - PAH!

UNAGI!

And no I am not talking about the "concept"... mentioned by Ross on Friends (season 6, ep. 17) that Unagi is, "a state of total awareness... being prepared for any danger that may be-fall you."

No, I am siding with Rachel and Pheobe in that... Unagi is a type of sushi... and a DELICIOUS SUSHI at that!!!

Unfortunately Unagi is typically DOUSED in a sugary-sweet sauce that really ruins all nutritional benefits of the fish... but I have come up with a very good solution to this problem which has enabled me to SCARF this eel down without a guilt in the world... (although I have heard it's on the Do Not Eat list... but I am going to pretend as though I never heard/read that!)

(Stupid sweet-ass sauce ruining my delicious EEL)

When I buy it from the store in the pre-BBQed package... I open up the package and WASH the fillet off... then I take about 1/2 a roll of paper towel and remove all the rest of the disgustingly sweet sauce... and let me tell you, naked eel is definitely NOT naked in flavor!!!

When I go to sushi restaurants and order eel sashimi, I will ALWAYS ask/write down that there is to be no extra eel sauce slopped on top, that way I am not bombarded with sugar calories that are simply NOT NEEDED!

So you're either now thinking...

A. She is a complete nut job of caring about sugar

B. Ew, eel, that's disgusting, I hate raw fish...

C. Whoa, good idea, although I probably won't go nuts with the paper towels

D. Tell me about the damn nutritional benefits!

And let me just make it clear that...

A. Yes I am completely nuts about avoiding sugar

B. Eel is ABSOLUTELY delicious and should NOT be avoided (out of fear that it's slimy and "yucky") and it is a COOKED fish (if you'd call it a fish)

C. Yes yes, I know I am so smart... and in my mind, every little bit of sauce that comes off is a little less calories & sugar! (but I am aware I probably won't be able to get ALL of the sauce off)

D. I was just about to come to that!

So here you are all you letter D thinkers... EEL'S ROSTER OF HEALTH BENEFITS:
  1. Full of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  2. High in Protein
  3. Very High in Vitamin A & B1 & B2
  4. High in Vitamin D & E
  5. Rich in Phosphorus
  6. And did I mention... SCRUMPTIOUS!

While eel is a bit on the caloric side, it's oh so worth it... So don't shy away from it! Go nuts and order a sushi roll or better yet eel sashimi the next time you visit your sushi restaurant... Or if you're lucky like me and you have a Whole Foods near by, go and pick up a package or two and simply toast it in the oven until perfection! Seriously, you will have a mouthgasum and then thank me when you're done! Ha Ha Ha!

PS: There is another kind of eel served at Sushi Restaurants called Anago which is SEA EEL and also very tasty... but it's not as popular as Unagi. If you do get the chance, sample both and let me know which one you think is better!

The Naturally Healthy Sweetener

I am sure you have all heard of low/non sugar additives such as, aspartame, sorbitol, manitol, splenda, saccharin etc... but have you heard of STEVIA?

Stevia Rebaudiana is a derivative from a plant found in South America and has been used for a centuries in both South America and China. This herb is roughly 300 times sweeter than sugar, calorie free and comes in a white powder form or liquid tincture.

It has been recorded that Stevia Extract stabilizes blood sugar and also aids the pancreas - this herb is very valuable to those with diabetes &/or hypoglycemia as well as those who wish to loose weight and cut out sugar from their diets.

Other studies suggest that Stevia decreases the desire for actual sugary sweets, improves digestion and soothes upset stomachs. It has also been noted that Stevia can fight infections of the mouth which is why a lot of people even use it as a mouth wash.

Stevia can also be used topically and is known to soften the skin when applied. It even is a notable wrinkle smoother and a scar healer!

Why the FDA took so long to OK Stevia... I don't know! I have been using it for 8 years now DAILY in my coffee and adore it! I especially adore the brands: Sweet Leaf & NuNaturals - So to everyone who is trying to rid sugar from their life and have read one too many articles about Aspartame being dangerous - Try Stevia, all health food stores have it these days and popular drink brands are ever starting to use them!

Where You Can Get Stevia:
